Ken Cashell Memorial Tournament
Ok so its been awhile since I have blogged about poker, mainly because I didnt feel like blogging at all. Between the time I last updated this I have played many 1/2 games in tunersville and played a bunch of tournaments as well as took a trip to turning stone. skipping past all of that however I am going to jump right to the Ken Cashell Memorial Tournament. I play in this tournament every year and this year was no different. This was the biggest field ever, and was held at my uncles store at the University of Delaware. This year there was 44 people and a $60 buy in. I was excited to play as first place pay out was $1000.
Before I go on, let me say that my brother was originally supposed to play, and had already put money up to be in the tournament. Late in the week he comes to find out he has to work and cannot get off of work, also he can not get a refund on his money. So I called some people up to play and talked to Vinny Baldino. He told me he would consider it and call me back. When he finally did, he said he didnt think he could play, when i found out it was a financial problem, i told him I would stake him in this tournament.
For those of you who dont know, when someone gets staked the staker puts up the buy-in for the player, on the terms that the player does not have to return the money should he lose, however he gives 50% of his winnings to the staker.
Anyway, Vinny agreed and came along and played. So the first three hands of the tournament I play 7T, J9, and 5T, bluffing on all three and winning 2 of 3. after that I told myself I would tighten up. The table I was at was weak, so I thought I had a good shot. We started with 1500 in chips and I built my stack up to 2500 when the following hand occured.
with blinds 25/50 I am in the big blind. UTG makes it 400 to go. I was curious as to if he knew what he was doing, and even if he knew what the chips were worth. anyway its folded around to me. I look at JQ suited in spades. could be an easy fold, only 475 in the pot and costs me 350 to see the flop. So then I had to put him on a hand. I did not put him on AA or KK and because of such a large UTG raise, most people limp or min-raise(most moderate level players). QQ and JJ were possibilities, the bet had a better chance of JJ than QQ, and even so i had one of each. so then I thought a bet like that would be possible with 88,99,TT. also maybe AK. or he could just not want to see a flop with AT, A9, but those are unlikely. I decide that he doesnt know what he is doing and I put him on 99. I also think I can get alot of chips if I hit the right flop, seeing as he is the chip leader. So then the dream flop comess Jc 5s 6s . Top pair with the flush draw. Being first to act I decide to make a bet that would both be a big bet considering the pot but in return commit me to the hand, which now I was ok with. Now I am only hurting if he has JJ, 55, 66. any other hand that he would be holding I am 50% or better against. and he may even think I am bluffing if I bet 1k, and call with TT or 99. I bet 1k and he goes all in, now I know he has QQ-AA and its a coin toss, I make the call and he has AA no spade. 50% exactly. turn 2d river 3h and I am out 42nd out of 44.
Looking back my only mistake was making the call preflop, but thats the gamble I wanted to take to play to a big chip lead.
In the side games we played mostly ante games. The first table I sat at was .50 ante, dealers choice $2 max bet. there was no limit to the number of bets on any round. We played mostly Omaha Hi/lo and Holdem. Anyway, I take a huge hit in a three way pot in Omaha Hi/Lo. all in all I lost $60. I have Ah Kh Td 8h. $2 bet to me, I raise to $4, three callers. Flop comes Ks Jh 6h. I loved this flop, first to act bets $2, is raised by a woman who is a mostly holdem player, so I am certain she doesnt understand hand strength in Omaha. I make it $6. one fold behind and the other two call. Three handed, the turn is a Ks Jh 6h Ts. Now with no low I decide to slow down and hope for a boat or flush on the river. First to act bets $2, the woman calls, I make it $4, first to act makes it $6. Now I have to put him on something like KQT or JQT. a bet on that flop and not a reraise smells like open ended and a pair, and now he hit two pair, he could also have QTT the open ended and now he hit a set. Either way, If I can boat up or flush up on the river, I am going to make some money. I am not worried about the woman at all. River is a K J 6 T K
first to act bets, woman calls, I raise, first to act raises, woman calls, I raise, first to act raises, woman calls, I raise, first to act raises, woman calls, I throw in my last bet, call, call.
First to act has KJ of course. woman had AQ23, thought she won the low, lol.
huge pot, after that I dont rebuy just switch tables. I move to a table with $1 ante, $3 max bet, holdem only.
Bully at the table, old guy who looks like a thin doyle brunson. bets $3 every hand preflop, and just about on every betting round. only is dropping 92 and 24 etc. plays and bets any face, any ace. its 4 handed so he is winning some chips. I cant play back at him because I didnt buy in enough. finally i pick up some hands, get 88 and call him down to the river he has K3 and hit his K on the turn. I get 99 and bet 3, he raises to 6, and I make it 9 preflop, take this one calling 3 on the flop turn and river and he flips Q3 hit a queen on the river. after that I call him down with A9 high and take a decent pot from him. two new players sit, and I rebuy. now I can tighten up. Big hand comes up with Doyle, young bald guy, and me. Doyle makes it 3, baldy calls, I make it 6 with AKo. they both call. Flop comes A K Q. Doyle Makes it 3, Baldy makes it 6, I make it 9, Doyle folds, Baldy calls. Pot is now $45. Turn is an 8. Baldy bets 3, I make it 6, he makes it 9, I cap it at 12, he calls. pot is now $69. river is an A K Q 8 8. Capped at 12 again pot is $93 and he flips A8. crushed, i decide to take another break.
I go over to watch some of vinny, he is down low, and he has got it all in with Q9 preflop and had two callers. Flop comes 8 3 A or something of that sort. Dumb guy bets into the empty pot and the other player folds. Dumbass shows JT. blank blank and Vinny triples up with Q high. after that I go back and play pretty well and built my stack up over $160.
Long story short, Vinny ends up grinding his way to the final table, builds his stack up when his JJ hits a set after calling a guy who went all in with A8 preflop. Starts off fast at the final table and builds his stack near 10k. grinds it out some more and gets into the FINAL 2. gets the chip lead, and gets it all in with 66 vs AQ. his opponent spikes a Q on the flop and leaves Vinny crippled, Vinny takes second. and a $500 win. I ended up only down $30 in the side games, add $120 buy in to the tournament(me and Vinny's buy in) and subtract that from the $250 I get for staking Vinny, and it ended up a $100 profit day. Not to bad at all for going out 42 out of 44.
Franks poker league season 3 Tournament of Champions will most likely be my next update, unless I play a $1/$2 game until then. I won a weak fielded season 3 player of the year. hopefully season 4 is more popular.
